Flatirons - Boulder, Colorado

 The Flatirons – Boulder, Colorado

Zoom lenses on drones open up angles that can’t be seen otherwise. I took this photo from just east of Marshall Lake above the road next to where you park to access the trail in the photo. Sometimes you have to get far away from something to get the best perspective of it. (That’s El Dorado Canyon State Park on the left in the shadows btw)

The Flatirons, those iconic rock formations near Boulder, Colorado, have a fascinating geological history. Here’s a brief overview:

Flatirons Formation:

  • Ancient Seas: Millions of years ago, the area was covered by a vast sea.
  • Sedimentary Layers: Over time, layers of sediment, like sand and gravel, accumulated on the seafloor.

  • Mountain Building: Tectonic forces pushed these layers upward, tilting them into their current position.

  • Erosion: Wind and water gradually eroded the softer rock, leaving behind the harder, resistant sandstone that forms the Flatirons.

Human History:

  • Indigenous Peoples: Native American tribes, such as the Arapaho and Ute, revered the Flatirons as sacred sites.
  • European Settlement: European settlers were drawn to the area’s beauty and natural resources.
  • Recreation and Tourism: The Flatirons became a popular destination for hiking, climbing, and outdoor recreation.

The Name:

While the exact origin of the name “Flatirons” is unclear, it’s believed that it comes from their resemblance to old-fashioned flatirons used for ironing clothes.

Today, the Flatirons remain a beloved symbol of Boulder and a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

Their unique shape and dramatic presence continue to inspire awe and wonder.

canvas print Canvas Wrap PRO is built with a solid, supported face which prevents sagging or warping over time. This feature ensures that your canvas will always look as tight and flat as the day it was made. Easy to clean too! (I’ve had these in my own home for almost 10 years, and have been easily able to even wipe them down with a warm damp rag without effecting the canvas in any way.

Traditionally Stretched Canvas
