St. Catherine’s “Chapel on the Rock” 2
St. Catherine’s Chapel on the Rock, also known as the Chapel on the Rock, is a unique and historic Catholic chapel located in Allenspark, Colorado. It’s a popular tourist destination and a significant landmark due to its distinctive architecture and spiritual significance.
History
The chapel’s story began in 1916 when Monsignor Joseph Bosetti stumbled upon a large rock formation near Rocky Mountain National Park. Inspired by the biblical phrase “upon this rock I will build my church,” he envisioned building a church on the rock itself. Despite facing financial constraints and bureaucratic hurdles, the chapel’s construction began in 1935 and was completed in 1936.
Pope John Paul II’s Visit
One of the most significant events in the chapel’s history was the visit of Pope John Paul II during his 1993 World Youth Day visit to Denver. The Pope prayed within the chapel and later blessed it. This visit further elevated the chapel’s spiritual significance and attracted global attention.
Highlights

Spiritual Significance: The chapel is a place of prayer and reflection for both Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Its serene atmosphere and stunning natural setting offer a unique spiritual experience.
Historical Landmark: The chapel is recognized as a historical landmark in Boulder County, preserving its legacy and attracting visitors interested in its rich history.
Pope John Paul II’s Connection: The Pope’s visit and blessing have added to the chapel’s spiritual aura and historical importance.
